The Chinese presence
Chinese or China-linked entities are also active in conventional news outlets and social media in Latin America. According to a report by Virginia-based cyber-security company Nisos in July 2023, “China’s government has yet to reach the same level of domestic engagement as Russia, but that does not mean it is not trying to influence political and cultural perceptions in the region, especially to counter unfavourable perceptions of China following the Covid-19 pandemic, which originated in China.” On the other hand, China’s trade and investment links with Latin America far outweigh those of Russia, potentially allowing Beijing to gain greater leverage.
