An army of hipster influencers

Something remarkable happened in mid 2023. In a compilation of regional opinion polls carried out by Argentina-based think tank Directorio Legislativo, El Salvador’s authoritarian hipster president, Nayib Bukele, emerged as the most popular Latin American leader with a remarkable 91% approval rating, ahead of Mexico’s Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who had 64% approval, and Brazil’s Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, with 56%.
