PERU: Embattled attorney general turns on Boluarte

It is open warfare between Peru’s President Dina Boluarte and Attorney General Patricia Benavides, with both accusing the other of undermining the country’s institutions in order to deflect attention from their alleged crimes. Benavides submitted a constitutional complaint against Boluarte and leading government ministers on 27 November, accusing them of “qualified homicide” in relation to the deaths of four anti-government protesters. Boluarte responded by accusing Benavides of seeking to distract from an investigation into alleged influence peddling in the upper ranks of the attorney general’s office, which has prompted an open revolt by prosecutors against Benavides and put her position in doubt.
