MEXICO: Notimex shuttering moves forward

Mexico’s government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador came one step closer to shutting down the national news agency Notimex on 28 November, as the federal lower chamber of congress approved a presidential decree to shutter the agency. The move is widely viewed as a further example of backsliding in press freedom under López Obrador, who is known for his frequent verbal attacks on journalists critical of his government. It also comes amid a recent spate of violent incidents against media workers in Mexico, further raising press freedom concerns.
