BRAZIL: Government steps up efforts to tackle organised crime

While calls for tough police crackdowns to address security concerns are usually more associated with right-wing politicians, the left-leaning administration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has been backing a militarised approach to public security. The government announced a new national initiative to combat organised crime on 2 October and mobilised federal funding and boots on the ground to support police operations in states such as Rio de Janeiro and Bahia.
