HONDURAS: AG appointment proves contentious

Honduras’s authorities have faced mounting pressure to appoint a new attorney general (AG) after failing to meet the 31 August deadline to fill the vacancy left by Oscar Chinchilla whose second four-year stint has come to an end. Manoeuvring by President Xiomara Castro’s leftist Partido Libertad y Refundación (Libre), which in the absence of the requisite two-thirds legislative majority of 86 to make the appointment, circumvented procedure on 1 November to name its pick for the post, is threatening a major political crisis. It is also serving as a strain on relations with the US.
