ARGENTINA: Milei embraces the caste

Far from rooting out the political caste, Argentina’s president-elect Javier Milei appears to be embedding it. Milei’s most persistent campaign promise is giving way to political reality as he seeks to gain support for his agenda in congress. He is incorporating members of most of the principal ‘castes’ in his cabinet, with ministries awarded to politicians from the right-of-centre Propuesta Republicana (Pro), and the centrist Unión Cívica Radical (UCR) - the mainstays in the Juntos por el Cambio (JxC) coalition – as well as non-Kirchnerista Peronists. His most striking choice was that of Martín Menem, the scion of the Menem political dynasty, as president of the lower chamber of congress.
