Peru’s former president Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000) walked free from prison on 6 December. Fujimori was sentenced to 25 years in prison in 2009 for human rights abuses and corruption. The baleful legacy of Fujimori’s decade-long authoritarian kleptocracy which, beyond crimes against humanity and corruption, hollowed out democratic institutions and left a collapsed party system, remains very much alive in Peru.
