EL SALVADOR: Bukele appoints private secretary to run country

El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele stepped down on 1 December in order to stand for re-election next February in compliance with the creative interpretation of the constitution by loyalist magistrates appointed by a congress dominated by his personalist Nuevas Ideas (NI) party. Bukele will, to all intents and purposes, continue to wield power, as the presidential designee he appointed to stand in for him is his private secretary, who has no previous political experience.
