PERU: Separation of powers under threat

Peru’s judiciary is roiling in the wake of the 7 December suspension of the attorney general, Patricia Benavides, who was removed by the judicial council (JNJ) after being accused of leading a criminal organisation within the attorney general’s office. Now, however, the JNJ itself is under threat, with congress due to vote on 15 December on whether to impeach its seven members in a move which the JNJ has said would amount to a “break in the democratic order”.
