Colombia’s senate voted to archive a bill this week which sought to enact a constitutional reform to legalise cannabis consumption for adult recreational use, prompting fierce criticism from President Gustavo Petro. But one of the proponents of the bill accused Petro of having conspired against its passage days earlier by annulling a decree signed by his predecessor Iván Duque (2018-2022) which had authorised the police to confiscate the permitted minimum quantity of recreational drugs (20 grams of cannabis) from people in public spaces.
