In brief: Monthly drop in Brazil’s retail sales in October

*Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released the figures for retail sales in October, showing a decrease of 0.3% in monthly sales volume. The accumulated sales volume in the 12 months until October registered a 1.5% increase compared to the previous 12-month period. In a press release, Ibge research coordinator Cristiano Santos is cited as welcoming the annual increase while pointing out that retail sales figures have shown little monthly variation for most of 2023. Aside from January, when sales volume saw a monthly rise of 3.9%, every month since February has registered increases or decreases of less than 1.0%. Out of the eight product categories measured, five saw a monthly drop in October. The categories with the largest monthly drop in sales were office supplies, information & communications equipment (-5.7%) and fabrics, clothing & footwear (-1.9%).
