LatinNews White Paper: Transparency, the Port of La Unión, and Discomfort Over China’s Advance in El Salvador

El Salvador's February 2019 presidential election will take place amidst a growing and improving relationship with the People’s Republic of China (PRC); indeed, China is increasing its influence across the region. It is a relationship that promises much to the people of El Salvador, but it is not without its controversies. There is discomfort in the country regarding the lack of transparency and the manner in which the government is managing initiatives involving the PRC. The fear is that the engagement with China could lead to outcomes principally benefitting Chinese firms, and the elites making the deals, at the expense of the country.

Our guest author, R. Evan Ellis, Latin America research professor with the US Army War College Strategic Studies Institute, explores the situation in El Salvador in our latest White Paper. Sign up below to receive a download link for this important paper.
