REGION: Ecuador’s crisis prompts Andean security accord

Ecuador’s hurtling plunge into narco-violence has intensified discussion among the country’s neighbours over how they can work together to confront transnational drug trafficking. On 21 January, government ministers from the four members of the Andean Community (CAN) trade bloc – Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia – met in Lima to discuss the Ecuadorean crisis. Despite fundamental differences in their governments’ approaches to national security, they produced a 13-point agreement pledging deeper integration in the battle against organised crime.
