MEXICO: Ayotzinapa proxy in executive’s war on judiciary

The investigation into the 2014 disappearance of 43 trainee teachers from Ayotzinapa, Guerrero state, has become the latest battleground for President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s offensive against the judiciary. The government has slammed the federal judicial power (PJF) following the lifting of pre-trial detention orders for eight members of the military charged in relation to the case. The dispute risks overshadowing the very real setbacks preventing justice for the families of the 43 students.
