CHILE: Boric faces backlash over Piñera funeral speech

On 9 February Chile held a state funeral for its former president Sebastián Piñera (2010-2014; 2018-2022), who died in a helicopter accident on 6 February [WR-24-05]. Speaking at Piñera’s funeral, Chile’s leftist President Gabriel Boric attempted to deliver a unifying message, commending Piñera’s work and character while acknowledging the pair had their political differences. In doing so, he appears to have drawn criticism from both the right-wing opposition and parties within his own ruling left-wing coalition.
