HAITI: Key deadline comes and goes

Haiti’s caretaker prime minister, Ariel Henry, recently faced massive protests calling for his resignation by 7 February. The date has particular significance in Haiti as the date specified in the country’s constitution for transfers of power to take place. It was also the date that Henry, who took over unelected in July 2021 following the assassination of former president Jovenel Moïse (2017-2021), had agreed to hand over power this year, as per a December 2022 agreement with the political opposition.
