GUATEMALA: Arévalo moves on security priority
Guatemala’s new President Bernardo Arévalo and his interior minister, Francisco Jiménez, recently unveiled a new elite task force to combat extortion (Gece). The launch of the new unit is in line with what the Arévalo government, which took office a month ago, has described as its top security priority. Unlike neighbouring El Salvador and Honduras, where states of exception have been declared to tackle extortion, involving the suspension of constitutional guarantees and deployment of the military, Arévalo is seeking to address the issue via democratic means.
