GUATEMALA: Rios Montt lags in polls, but do not discount him

Retired General Efraí­n Rí­os Montt has received judicial approval for his bid to run in the presidential elections on 9 November for the ruling Frente Republicano Guatemalteco (FRG). Shortly after our last publication, Guatemala's constitutional court, the country's highest court of appeal, ordered that the electoral college officially register Rí­os Montt, overruling the decision by the second court of appeal, the supreme court of justice, to suspend his registration while it heard a complaint filed by the opposition Unidad Nacional de la Esperanza (UNE) challenging his candidacy.
