Retired General Efraín Ríos Montt has received judicial approval for his bid to run in the presidential elections on 9 November for the ruling Frente Republicano Guatemalteco (FRG). Shortly after our last publication, Guatemala's constitutional court, the country's highest court of appeal, ordered that the electoral college officially register Ríos Montt, overruling the decision by the second court of appeal, the supreme court of justice, to suspend his registration while it heard a complaint filed by the opposition Unidad Nacional de la Esperanza (UNE) challenging his candidacy.
