HAITI: High-level resignation over Moïse investigation charges

Haiti’s ambassador to the Organization of American States (OAS), Léon Charles, a former police (PNd’H) chief (2004-2005; 2020-2021), has become the first high-profile figure to step down after his name appeared on a list of some 50 individuals indicted by local judge Walther Wesser Voltaire in relation to the July 2021 assassination of president Jovenel Moïse (2017-2021). While a parallel investigation has progressed in the US, these are among the first charges unveiled in Haiti in relation to Moïse’s murder. With the mastermind of his murder yet to be identified, the indictments made headlines for featuring the name of Moïse’s widow.
