Weekly Report - 29 February 2024 (WR-24-08)

Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro has summarily dismissed the secretary general of the foreign affairs ministry, José Antonio Salazar, who he accused of betrayal on 26 February for awarding a contract to the multinational Thomas Greg & Sons to print passports. In signing the resolution, Salazar revoked a decision by Álvaro Leyva, who was suspended as foreign minister for three months on 24 January by the inspector general’s office for alleged irregularities surrounding his decision to declare the contract awarded to the firm null and void [WR-24-03]. The opposition seized upon events at the foreign ministry to paint a picture of the Petro administration as chaotic and dysfunctional.
