BRAZIL: Rio police launch more raids in favelas

A large contingent of state military police of Rio de Janeiro launched a raid on favelas dominated by the powerful criminal organisation Comando Vermelho (CV) on 27 February. State authorities have backed heavy-handed police crackdowns on organised crime, launching a similar series of raids last year. This latest deployment has also caused significant disruption for local communities and re-ignited public debates about police brutality.
