PERU: Congress closes in on judicial coup

The permanent commission of Peru’s congress voted on 26 February to impeach the judicial council (JNJ) in an eminently politicised process. The unremitting efforts of congress to dismiss the seven magistrates sitting on the JNJ (this is the fourth attempt in recent months), widely condemned at home and abroad, are undermining juridical security in Peru and could deter investors. Approval of their impeachment by the full congress, the final step, would consummate the coup. The vote could take place on 6 March.
