VENEZUELA: Crunch time for opposition as election set for July
After months of speculation, Venezuela’s presidential election has been set for 28 July. The challenge facing the opposition coalition Plataforma Unitaria Democrática (PUD) is immense as it seeks to deny President Nicolás Maduro a further six years in power. In a move that seemed designed to plunge the PUD into disarray, the national electoral council (CNE) has set a deadline of 25 March for the registration of candidacies. That means that the PUD can no longer delay its decision over whether to replace its chosen candidate, María Corina Machado, who has been controversially disqualified [WR-24-04].
