BRAZIL: Pressure mounts on Bolsonaro as coup probe progresses

The former commander of the Brazilian army, Marco Antônio Freire Gomes, testified as a witness to the federal police (PF) on 1 March as part of the investigations into an alleged plot for a military coup to overturn the 2022 election defeat of former president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023). The PF has noted that Freire Gomes was present in meetings in which Bolsonaro had allegedly discussed a potential conspiracy with the military’s top brass, but the former army chief was reportedly opposed to launching a coup and his testimony on the meetings could pile more pressure on Bolsonaro.
