EL SALVADOR: Bukele vanquishes opposition

El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele tightened his stranglehold on power on 3 March in municipal elections, despite the lacklustre performance of his personalist party Nuevas Ideas (NI), benefitting from gerrymandering. Bukele, who was re-elected last month with his NI winning all but a handful of seats in the downsized 60-seat legislative assembly, said some NI mayors had been punished for “dreadful governance”, which was why he had not endorsed them, but allied parties had won instead with the opposition securing just one of the 44 municipalities.
