PERU: Boluarte left scrambling over ‘Rolexgate’

What limited popularity Peru’s President Dina Boluarte enjoys is in danger of evaporating after the attorney general’s office opened a preliminary investigation into her for possible illicit enrichment and non-declaration of assets in the wake of a local press report detailing her ownership of more than a dozen watches, including from the luxury Swiss brand Rolex. Congressional legislators called on Boluarte to account for how she came into possession of these timepieces, and the left-wing Perú Libre (PL), her estranged former party, said it would present a motion of impeachment against her on the grounds of ‘permanent moral incapacity’. But most deputies are likely to be reluctant to initiate a process that would lead to early elections.
