CHILE: Police chief arrested in damaging scandal

The head of Chile’s investigative police force (PDI), Sergio Muñoz, was placed under preventive detention on 19 March charged with having leaked classified documents and other secret information. Muñoz had tendered his resignation four days earlier, ahead of being formally charged, when public prosecutors raided his home and office. President Gabriel Boric said the charges against Muñoz were very serious and a full investigation essential. The scandal afflicting the head of the PDI comes at a difficult juncture for the national police. The head of the militarised Carabineros, Chile’s other police institution, will shortly be charged with responsibility for human rights abuses during the ‘Estallido Social’, the fatal unrest that gripped Chile in 2019.
