*Taiwan has authorised zero-tariffs for Paraguay’s pork exports, down from 12.5% previously. The announcement was made by Paraguay’s trade & industry minister, Javier Giménez, and Taiwan’s ambassador to Paraguay, José Chih-Cheng Han. According to the Paraguayan government, Taiwan is the largest export market for Paraguay pork, accounting for 90% of total pork exports. The government said that Paraguay’s pork exports to Taiwan totalled US$19m in 2023, and expressed hope that this figure would rise to US$100m per year under its mandate. The two governments also announced zero tariffs on 16 other Paraguayan exports including wheat flour, beef burgers, ethyl alcohol, textile garments, and spark plug wire sets used in transportation. Giménez also revealed that there were plans to remove tariffs from poultry exports. Paraguay is one of only 12 countries in the world – and the last in South America – that maintains diplomatic relations with Taiwan rather than the People’s Republic of China.
