NICARAGUA: FSLN further cements control

On 3 March Nicaragua held regional elections in the North Atlantic and South Atlantic autonomous regions (Raan and Raas) on the impoverished Caribbean Coast. As with other elections held in recent years under the authoritarian government led by President Daniel Ortega, the ruling Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) swept the board, in a process widely criticised by institutions like the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR). A notable absentee was indigenous party Yatama (Yapti Tasba Masraka Nanih Asla Takanka), a former Ortega ally, whose legal party status was revoked in October 2023, amid the government’s continued crackdown on dissent.
