VENEZUELA: Trying to crack the opposition’s unity

There are signs that an increasingly united Venezuelan opposition is troubling President Nicolás Maduro ahead of the 28 July election. The opposition had in recent weeks seemed at risk of becoming divided by the registration of two separate candidates – Edmundo González and Manuel Rosales. Now, however, a clear consensus has formed in support of González, the official candidate for the Plataforma Unitaria Democráica (PUD) coalition. The national electoral council (CNE) is doing its best to ensure a split opposition vote, preventing Rosales from withdrawing from the race and formally endorsing González.
