In brief: Nicaragua’s economic activity picks up

*Nicaragua’s central bank (BCN) has released new figures for its monthly index of economic activity (IMAE), registering 5.6% year-on-year growth in February 2024. This is up from 3.4% growth in January. The February year-on-year figure was driven by hotels & restaurants (+17.1%), trade (+11.6%), and mining & quarrying (+10.0%). Meanwhile fishing & aquaculture was down 10.6% year-on-year, while agriculture was down 2.2%. In seasonally adjusted terms, the IMAE for February was up 1.7% on the previous month, while in year-on-year seasonally adjusted terms, it was up 5.2% compared with February 2023.
