DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Fernández wins as Mejí­a roundly rejected

President Hipólito Mejí­a was punished by the electorate on 16 May. The victory of Leonel Fernández in the first round of the presidential elections might not have been as convincing as the polls were suggesting but the result was a firm rejection of Mejí­a, whose economic failings undermined his re-election bid. It was also a glowing endorsement of Fernández, a man who only four years ago was similarly chastised by an electorate disillusioned with his government's egregious record on corruption.
