Central American integration is beginning to look a little less like a pipe dream. Nicaragua formally joined the Central American customs union, comprising Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras, on 6 May at a
ceremony held at the border post of Guasaule, on the Honduras-Nicaragua frontier. The leaders of the four countries- Oscar Berger (Guatemala), Francisco Flores (El Salvador), Ricardo Maduro (Honduras) and Enrique Bolaños (Nicaragua) - were each in attendance.
The impetus for the current integration drive was provided by Berger shortly after his inauguration earlier this year when he signed a customs union with his Salvadorean counterpart on 10 March (see RC-04-03). Honduras followed suit on 14 April. End of preview - This article contains approximately 538 words.
