In brief: Brazil’s gov’t boosts funding for northeast region

*Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has visited the north-eastern state of Bahia and announced more federal funding for public works. One of the main projects announced was the duplication of a section of the BR-116 highway, which is part of a series of expansion works in the state which will receive a total of R$2.4bn (US$424m). The funding will also be allocated for roadworks on other highways in Bahia, such as BR-030 and BR-101. Lula also announced the allocation of R$3.9bn for a package of initiatives across a range of policy areas. These include a further R$1.5bn for the ‘Luz para Todos’ programme aimed at connecting more remote communities to the national electricity grid; R$1.9bn for schools in Bahia; and R$882m for social housing projects. Lula’s visit comes amid a highly publicised regional tour, with the president having recently visited the south-eastern states of Minas Gerais, São Paulo, and Rio de Janeiro. The federal government is ramping up its displays of cooperation and support for local authorities, with government allies across the country running in mayoral elections this October. Today (2 July) Lula is due to continue the tour in his native state of Pernambuco, which borders Bahia to the north.
