NICARAGUA: Plot to do away with Bolaños?

Daniel Ortega, the leader of the opposition Sandinistas, is not prepared to go quietly. There has been increasing speculation in the media of late that a sharp reverse for the Sandinistas in municipal elections later this year might spell the end for Ortega. His response has been unequivocal: Nicaragua should do away with a presidential form of government - a 'failed model' he claims the US has tried to impose - and replace it with a parliamentary one based on 'people's assemblies'.
