*Bolivia’s central bank (BCB) has published new inflation figures showing that monthly inflation in August was 1.58% – up from 0.47% in July. This brought annual inflation to 5.19%, up from 3.95% in July. This represents the highest monthly inflation figure since February 2011, and the highest annual figure since February 2015. Bolivia had largely avoided the inflationary pressures that hit most of the region following the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Economy Minister Marcelo Montenegro said that rising inflation was due to a wide range of factors, including adverse climate conditions, the smuggling of goods out of Bolivia, roadblocks by anti-government protesters, and global geopolitical tensions.
