In brief: Scholarship programme roll-out confirmed in Mexico

*Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum and Education Minister Mario Delgado have confirmed that over 20m school children will benefit in 2025 from a new universal scholarship, ‘Rita Cetina Gutiérrez’, named after a 19th-century Mexican educator, writer, and feminist. Speaking at an event held at Playas de Rosarito, a town in Baja California state, Delgado said that the government would begin rolling out the scholarships to some 5m secondary school children registered in Mexico’s public schools. According to the government, in the first phase, each family with a child enrolled in secondary school will receive M$1,900 (US$95) every two months, while families with additional children in secondary school would receive an extra M$700 per child. The scheme, which is due to be extended in due course to primary school children, builds on the Benito Juárez education scholarships for the poor programme, one of the flagship welfare programmes of Sheinbaum’s predecessor and mentor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024), which launched in 2019.
