TRINIDAD & TOBAGO: President calls for unity after crime rates rise

At the ceremonial opening of parliament in late September President George Maxwell Richards called for unity among the government, opposition and citizens to rid the country of its criminal element. He said the country was in crisis because of the upsurge in crime. Parliament opened just days after the third bombing in three months of downtown Port-of-Spain and the publication of record high homicide statistics.
