BANANAS: EU imposes, WTO to rule

Latin American banana producers are angry at the European Union's decision to impose a tariff of Euro176 (US$207.6) per tonne on bananas from the region. They say that this decision will poison the crucial ministerial talks in Hong Kong, from 13 to 18 December, to liberalise trade under the auspices of the World Trade Organization. The previous two WTO ministerial summits, in Seattle (in 1999) and Cancún (in 2003), also ended with no agreement.
