GUYANA: Government postpones High Court Amendment bill

Following strong criticism of the government's proposed High Court Amendment bill, President Bharrat Jagedo agreed to delay its reading in parliament until after he meets with the opposition. On 22 November the Brooklyn-based Caribbean Guyana Institute for Democracy (CGID) issued a strong condemnation of what it considered to be the government's attempts to gain greater control of the judiciary. The CGID labelled the government's drafting and introduction of the High Court Amendment Bill in the country's parliament as an "ill-conceived and irresponsible scheme."
