In brief: Honduras’ remittances surge

*Honduras’ central bank (BCH) has released new figures which show that remittances to the country totalled US$774,628 in January, up from US$660,861 in the same month in 2024. Remittances to Honduras totalled US$9.74bn in 2024, up from US$9.18bn in 2023. According to the latest (2023) figures from the World Bank, remittances account for 26.1% of Honduras’ GDP. Efforts by the new US administration led by President Donald Trump to push ahead with its mass deportation plan has cast doubt on the future of what remains a crucial source of household income in the country.
