In brief: Mexico’s CFE to boost internet access in remote areas

*Mexico’s state-run electricity firm Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) has acquired a 49% share stake in the Mexican telecommunications company Altán Redes, as well as a 24% stake in the company’s corporate voting rights. According to a CFE statement, “with this transaction, control of Altán will be permanently in the hands of Mexico’s government”. CFE stated that its buyout will boost the rollout of internet services to remote areas. In a statement it said that alongside Altán it “provides internet in areas in which no other operator is interested” – specifically communities of between 250 and 5,000 residents. It added that the merger will “reduce barriers to entry to the telecommunications market, connect the most remote areas, and help guarantee the right to connectivity”.
