In his New Year's address, the president of Guyana, Bharrat Jagdeo, said that
his government would like to see elections held within the constitutionally due
date of 4 August and that, whatever the outcome, all parties must respect the
results. The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has mentioned a late July date
as the most likely for the holding of polls. However, with registration of the
electorate off to a slow start, there has been some concern among the major
political parties that the date will be pushed back.
