COSTA RICA: Arias could win in first round

On 11 January the frontrunner in the presidential elections, Oscar Arias, rejected a call from his closest rival, Ottón Solí­s, to hold a public debate. "It wouldn't interest me even if the Holy Father asked me himself," he said. "If Don Ottón thinks a debate can reduce a 25 point difference," Arias added, "he has been badly advised." Such confidence appears to be well founded: one opinion poll suggests the former president and Nobel Peace Prize winner could triumph in the first round of presidential elections due on 5 February.
