*Mexico’s 128-member federal senate has approved secondary legislation regarding energy reform, which creates eight new laws and reforms two. Approved by 85 votes in favour, 39 against, with one abstention, the legislative package follows the ratification by both houses in October 2024 of a constitutional reform initiative regarding the energy sector which is aimed at strengthening the dominant role of Mexico’s state-run electricity (CFE) and oil (Pemex) firms as well as stipulating the precise role for private companies in Mexico’s electricity market. The legislative package approved yesterday now goes to the lower chamber for ratification.
