In brief: Nicaragua reports slower GDP growth in 2024

*Nicaragua’s central bank (BCN) has announced that GDP grew by 3.6% in 2024, down from 4.4% in 2023. The BCN highlighted year-on-year growth in sectors including construction (+18.1%), hotels and restaurants (+10.7%), trade (+6.2%), financial intermediation and related services (+5.7%), transport and communications (+4.4%), and water (+4.2%). It noted contractions in fishing and aquiculture (-8.7%), mining and quarrying (-0.5%), and agriculture (-0.3%). The BCN also highlighted a 13 percentage point increase in internal demand, driven by a 7.3% increase in consumer spending, with household spending up by 8.6%. Gross fixed capital formation increased by 17.3%, led by construction (+17.7%) and machinery and equipment (+17.1%).
