In brief: Panama unions stage strike

*Panama’s leading teachers’ union Asociación de Profesores (Asoprof) and other prominent unions, such as the powerful construction workers’ union Sindicato Único Nacional de Trabajadores de la Construcción y Similares (Suntracs), have staged a 24-hour nationwide strike against new legislation which reforms the country’s social security system (CSS). Unions maintain that the new legislation, which was promulgated by Panama’s President José Raúl Mulino on 18 March, is aimed at privatising health and pension provision for the benefit of banks and big companies. The strike on 21 March was accompanied by protests in various parts of the country such as the capital, Panama City, and provinces including Colón and Chiriquí. The same unions have called further protests for 26 and 27 March.
