Argentina: On 21 March US Secretary of State
Marco Rubio announced the designation of Argentina’s former president
Cristina Fernández (2007-2015), and her former federal planning minister
Julio De Vido (2003-2015) for their involvement in
“significant corruption during their time in public office”. According to a press release by the US State Department, the two former officials “
abused their positions by orchestrating and financially benefitting from multiple bribery schemes involving public works contracts, resulting in millions of dollars stolen from the Argentine government”. The statement adds that “
multiple courts” have convicted the former president and planning minister for corruption, which it says undermines the “
Argentine people’s and investors’ confidence in Argentina’s future”. It notes that the designation renders Fernández, De Vido, and their immediate family members generally ineligible for entry into the US.
