The decision by Mexico’s lower chamber of congress to maintain the immunity from prosecution of Cuauhtémoc Blanco, a deputy for the ruling left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena), is causing headaches for the government led by President Claudia Sheinbaum. On 29 March feminist groups took to the streets in Mexico City (CDMX) to protest against the decision not to lift the immunity enjoyed by Blanco, who faces an allegation of attempted rape, among other crimes. Suspicions have also been raised surrounding a potential pact between Morena and legislators from the centrist opposition Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI), who also voted against lifting Blanco’s immunity. Sheinbaum has attempted to distance herself from the lower chamber’s decision, saying her government “protects no-one” and calling for Blanco to testify before the authorities.End of preview - This article contains approximately 672 words.
